You may not have to pay for all of it
Veterans can get up to $6,800 through the VA’s HISA grant. Medicaid waivers commonly cover $5,000 to $15,000 of accessibility work. Some Medicare Advantage plans contribute a few hundred a year. Local Area Agencies on Aging install ramps free of charge in many counties.
Most people never find out they qualify, partly because most programs require approval before the work starts. We wrote a detailed guide to all of them — including the parts that trip people up.

The safety check produces the same recommendations whether or not you ask to be contacted — you can take the results and hire whoever you like, or do the cheap fixes yourself. We’d rather tell you that a $30 pack of stair treads solves your worst problem than pretend you need a renovation.
